Eye Candy Monday–La La La
The journey through La La La Human Steps’ oeuvre continues with 2002′s Amelia. With Amelia, Lock put his dancers en pointe for the whole piece, using ballet technique in the service of contemporary choreography–a style he continues to this day with New Work.
At Speaking of Dance, writer Kevin Griffin noted that a lot of Lock’s early work with Louise Lecavalier was very “horizontal”–barrel turns, floor work, duets that pulled apart and flattened out. This ballet-inspired work moves the female dancers to the vertical, adding height and driving the eye up, while grounding it with pointe shoes. Wait ’til you see what he does with the men in 2007′s Amjad, our next post, happening mid-week. Meanwhile, enjoy.
