The Friday Round Up

Gather ’round, my darlings, while I tell you what to do. Obviously, it involves seeing some dance.

Tonight, you have a difficult choice to make. Go see Ballet BC’s presentation of the National Ballet of Canada as it celebrates 60 years of ballet with the Vancouver premieres of choreographer William Forsythe’s the second detail and choreographer James Kudelka’s The Man in Black, as well as choreographer Jerome Robbins’s Other Dances?

Or go to Dances for a Small Stage, as they leave downtown for Burnaby to present works by Karissa Barry, Cori Caulfield, Kathryn Crawford, Léon Feizo-Gas, Lina Fitzner and Caroline Liffmann, Caitlin Griffin, Deanna Overland, Robert Mitchell, and Jonathan Ryder and Cory Philley at the Shadbolt Centre. No need to choose–they’re both on TOMORROW as well!

Starting Monday, the Vancouver Flamenco Festival takes place at various venues around town and runs until October 2. Flamenco Rosario presents performances by Spain’s Javier Barón, Canada’s Esmerelda Enrique Spanish Dance Company, Canada’s Rosanna Terracciano, Flamenco Rosario, Mozaico Flamenco, and Moraima. Finally, Thursday (September 29), the Louis Riel Metis Dancers appear at the Scotiabank Dance Centre at noon as part of the Discover Dance series.  They’ll perform a selection of jigs, reels, and polkas, led by artistic director and champion jigger Yvonne Chartrand. WAY better than MacDonald’s for lunch.
