The Friday Round Up

So what if it is cold and rainy – the atmosphere at the Grupo Corpo shows last week was hot enough to keep you warm well into springtime! Did you enjoy the shows?

It’s Valentines Day so celebrate at a specials Valentines Day Dances for a Small Stage, tonight and tomorrow night. It is also DSS number 30 (congrats!!) and this anniversary show will feature an eclectic array of Vancouver’s hottest artistic talent, who will create and perform innovative contemporary dance works on the signature ‘small stage.’ At the Ukrainian Centre, 154 East 10th Avenue @ Main Street Tickets: $20 cash at the door or better yet online because these shows sell out! Doors at 7pm. All ages.

Battery Opera’s Bob’s Lounge is happening again this week, Friday as always, with quite the line-up: dancers Justine Chambers, Alison Denham and Billy Marchenski; and music-makers Ben Brown, Meredith Bates, Chris Gestrin. These Friday night occurrences happen at Unit Pitt Projects, 236 East Pender. 10pm to midnight. Tix at the door.

Geography—the body’s reality and story in space. A dazzling trans-continental dance creation, Shifting Geography features the choreography of Vancouver’s critically acclaimed Alvin Erasga Tolentino and Bonn-based RafaÎle Giovanola. Using those two cities as inspiration, the piece is an inquiry into the physical shifts of transformation, performed by six incredible international dance artists. At the Cultch, 8pm. Tix. February 20 – 22 Ballet BC in collaboration with Turning Point Ensemble presents Grace SymmetryThe  performances feature two World Premieres by Kevin O’Day and Medhi Walerski, plus the return of In Motion by Wen Wei Wang, an audience favourite from the 2010/11 dance season. At the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 8pm. Tix.
