The Friday Round Up

A little quieter than the last couple of weeks, but still so much to see, so much to do!

ROCCO5_expandedSo you want to know more about Rocco, DanceHouse’s last presentation of the season April 4 and 5, presented by EMIO GRECO|PIETER C.SCHOLTEN (ICKAMSTERDAM)? The International Choreographic Arts Centre (ICKamsterdam) is a platform for contemporary dance under the artistic leadership of Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. Since 1995, the duo have accumulated an internationally acknowledged expertise in the development of a new dance form, with tradition serving not only as a source of inspiration, but also as a counterforce. Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten began their joint search for new dance forms in 1995. After their first work Bianco in 1996, that same year, they set up the Emio Greco | PC dance company with which they created internationally successful dance productions until 2001. Subsequently, they shifted their frontiers to opera, music and film. Rocco is one of their many collaborations. But enough said – ladies and gentlemen, Rocco. Vancouver Playhouse, 8pm. Tix. And for those of you interested in the making of Rocco and the relationship between dramaturgy and dance, Dialogue on Dramaturgy Sunday April 6 may be for you! Participants will see the show on Saturday, then, in Sunday’s presentation, theatre artist Scholten will discuss his collaboration with Co-Artistic Director and choreographer Emio Greco of ICK Amsterdam (The International Choreographic Arts Centre) and his vision of dramaturgy. Videos illustrating conversations between ICK Amsterdam guest artist choreographers and their dramaturgs will be followed by an open discussion between Pieter and workshop participants to discuss work that is presently being done here in Vancouver, dramaturgy for non-narrative formats, and possibilities for the future. $39.50 for BOTH the show on Sat night and the Dialogue Sunday. Go here for more info.

Have you seen anything at the Vancouver International Dance Festival yet? There is Modus_Op_Gallery_2-724x343certainly enough to keep you busy for the next two weeks. This weekend Modus Operandi dances in Structure Tone, choreographed by Deanna Peters and it is FREE, at the Roundhouse Community Centre.

Also this week as part of the VIDF, March 19 and 20, Michael Sakamoto and Rennie Harris dance in Flash, a conversation in movement between two remarkable artists. Flash brings together Michael Sakamoto, a transdisciplinary creator best known for his innovative and philosophical approach to butoh, and Rennie Harris, an award winning, critically acclaimed hip hop choreographer who has served as USA cultural ambassador to Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. In this dance duet, the artists create a dialogue and exploration between their aesthetics of butoh and hip hop, cultural background, and personalities. Also FREE, and also at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Lots more at the VIDF – see here.

If tango is more your thing, BC Tango presents Carlos Barrionuevo & Mayte Valdes, and Guillermo Salvat & Silvia Grynt  in Tango Gala. At the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell St, Vancouver. Tix
