The Friday Round Up

Another week of local showings! And just wait, International Dance Day is just around the corner!

The dance students at the School for Contemporary Arts at SFU Woodwards sure are busy these days! Tonight and tomorrow Collectors is a showcase of student dance by two emerging collectives – Con8 Collective and Mayce – born out of the School for the Performing Arts’ Dance Major program. The production is organized and performed entirely by students and seeks to provide a platform for emerging choreographers to present longer, fully produced works. In Studio D, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, 8pm.

BloomChoreographersMascall Dance presents BLOOM 1 this coming Tuesday April 22. Five up-and-coming choreographers present parts of works in-progress, as well as a short showing of  Jennifer Mascall’s new work in-progress, The Three Cornered Hat. A sommelier then chooses a wine (or perhaps a beer) based on adjectives each choreographer provides describing their work. The audience tastes the drinks during each five-minute dance piece, and then a standup comic interprets the dance. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with the shows and sips at 5:15 p.m. 1130 Jervis St, Vancouver. $10 at the door which includes the wine. (Photo courtesy of Mascall Dance)

Another opportunity to see Vancouver’s up and coming dancers presents itself Thursday April 24 as part of the Scotiabank Dance Centre’s Discover Dance series. The energy and skill of a new generation takes the stage with a performance by the talented young dancers of Modus Operandi. Now in its seventh season, this rigorous training program run by Vancouver’s Out Innerspace Dance Theatre produces versatile and accomplished contemporary dancers who perform with technical power and theatrical intelligence, and go on to work professionally with companies across Canada. Presented as part of National Dance Week. At theDance Centre, noon. Tix
