The Friday Round Up

Happy Halloween – we haven’t put anything on your calendar for tonight so you can still do the Halloween thing! But lots to see the rest of the week.

downloadIn just two weeks, November 14 and 15, DanceHouse presents L-E-V in House. I don’t know if you read our last blog, but check it out here to see a video of House and read some great background info about the company and their work. The New York Times says “far from a cozy haven, this house throbs with a rave’s raw, bright energy.” Hmmm, this may be the closest you get to a rave at the Vancouver Playhouse, so come on out! 8pm. On November 4, one night only, see Tara Cheyenne Performance in Highgate, performed by Tara herself and some of Vancouver’s most recognized performers including Justine Chambers and Susan Eliot. Highgate is a morbid romp through Victorian funerary culture, jumping straight from the darkest part of Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg’s imagination.  Reflecting personal and collective grief a band of figures captivate in this fascinating gothic feast of death, physical oddity, humour and horror. Funny and unbelievably creative, don’t miss this! At the ScotiaBank Dance Centre, 8pm. Tixtara

Next Thursday November 6 – 8, Ballet BC opens it’s season with three works, including the World Premiere of White Act choreographed by Spanish-born choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan.  Magadan, a new voice in contemporary dance, reveres beauty, passion and nature, as well as the supernatural, and explores “…our constant attraction to everything that confronts and challenges the laws of physics against our mortal nature.” In this new work, he uses his clear artistic voice to create a complex, emotionally abundant world. Magadan has created work for Netherlands Dance Theater, Luna Negra Dance Theater and Ballet Mainz, among others. Ballet BC is the first ballet company in Canada to commission his work. Also works by Jacopo Godani and Vancouver born Lesley Telford. At the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse, 8pm. Tix

The Vancouver International Flamenco Festival continues until November 11. Growing from a single intimate evening performance in 1990, the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival has grown to become Western Canada’s premiere flamenco event, presenting the best in international, Canadian and regional flamenco. The week-long celebration of flamenco draws enthusiastic participants and audiences to several venues in Vancouver. Check out the selection of shows, classes and workshops around town here.

And for you dancers out there, the deadline for Dance Centre’s 12 Minute Max Spring session is November 3. 12MM aims to foster experimentation and the development of new work, along with critical feedback and community dialogue. The participants receive subsidized studio space at Scotiabank Dance Centre to research and create their works, with input from the guest curators, and share their work in an informal studio showing open to the public. Some works will be selected for full performance at the end of the season in June 2015. Get those applications in!

And finally: YOUR CHANCE TO BE A PART THE PUSH FESTIVAL! DANCE IN LE GRAND CONTINENTAL®! Here is your chance to perform in the 2015 PuSh International Performing Arts Festival!
