The Friday Round Up

Just a week away! February 27 and 28 DanceHouse brings Compagnie Marie Chouinard to town with 2 pieces, Gymnopédies and Henri Michaux: Mouvements. For the last two weeks we looked at each of the works in some detail. Here is the lady herself talking a little about her work for those of you who want to learn more. Playhouse Theatre, 8pm. TIX

And speaking about learning more: how about coming to Speaking of Dance. Tuesday February 24, dance artists Martha Carter and Andrea Keevil will share personal anecdotes of their experiences working with the company Marie Chouinard in their roles as Rehearsal Director (Carter) and Dancer (Keevil). Speaking of Dance is always a great way to dig a little deeper into what you will be seeing at the theatre (and even if you are not going to the show, SOD is well worth going to!). Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, 149 W. Hastings St. 7pm

And don’t forget to come to the theatre early (7:15 pm) for the pre-show chat, again with dance artists Martha Carter and Andrea Keevil.

Tonight and tomorrow February 20 and 21, Ballet BC brings us Miami City Ballet with a beautiful Balanchine program. 3 works will be performed: Serenade, a “classic” Balanchine, set to Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Serenade for Strings in C; Symphony in Three Movements, a large ensemble work that is bold and breathtaking, a tour-de-force that is striking for its simplicity and power, to the music of Stravinsky, and finally Ballo della Regina,  set to Verdi’s Don Carlos. Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 8pm. TIX

On until February 21, Wen Wei Dance brings Made In China. This Chinese-Canadian exploration of cultural identity is co-created and performed by Wen Wei Dance Artistic Director Wen Wei Wang; Beijing Modern Dance Company Artistic Director Gao Yanjinzi; award-winning classical Chinese musician of Vancouver’s Silk Road Music Qiu Xia He; and video and sound artist Sammy Chien. Made In China plunges into their respective artistic expressions to explore the commonalities of their Chinese heritage. Like a collective biography, the show explores memories of the creators’ childhoods in China, their artistic training during the Cultural Revolution, and the daring paths their CAREERS have taken abroad. Shared through dance, music, and storytelling, these memories are woven together to create an intimate dialogue between performers and audience that opens a window to another world. At the Firehall Arts Centre, 8pm TIX
As always, the Chutzpah Festival brings dance, music and theatre to a variety of venues around town. Some great dance, including Shay Kuebler in a new work, Maria Kong  in Backstage, and Idan Sharabi and Dancers with Vanessa Goodman. Check out the website for dates, places and times.
And finally check out some of our younger dancers at the Lamondance & Friends”Gala, Saturday, Feb 21st. This exciting show and live auction will present excerpts of Lamondance Newest Show and will showcase local talented dance and performing artists from the community. The company exhibits a tremendous range of styles of dance, while continuing to encourage the creation of new works by Lara Barclay, Monica Proenca, Davi Rodrigues and guest choreographers. at The BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts which is located in the Birch Building on the Capilano University campus in North Vancouver. Call 604)-980-3040 for tickets.
