The Friday Round Up

Well that was a short week wasn’t it! Time to plan your weekend – it’s going to be raining so fill up your time with some great dance!

Kafig 4This morning I watched the masterclass given by one of the Compagnie Käfig dancers, in town for the DanceHouse presentation of their work tonight and tomorrow, and if the show is even half as brilliant as the class then you are in for a treat! These young dancers from Brazil are talented, energetic, and beautiful to watch – and are performing some of the most exciting hip hop choreography around! They have taken this style of street dance, added a little capoeira, a little martial art, and have brought it into the theatre for a show not to be missed! One last look before you set off for the theatre. Oh, and come a little early – there will be a pre-show chat both nights at 7:15pm with Natalie LeFebvre Gnam (plastic orchid factory) and Astrid Toledo (Cie. Käfig). At the Vancouver Playhouse, 8pm. And on the theme of DanceHouse, have you heard about next season 2015/16? Hofesh Shechter  will open the season in November! Remember when they were here in 2009 – what an unforgettable show!   In February Crystal Pite teams up with the Electric Theatre Company for a new collaborative work. And to end the season, April brings us  Companhia Urbana de Dança, another fantastic young Brazilian company that has received rave reviews worldwide! Check out the article in this week’s Georgia Straight for more details. And you know, you might want to subscribe for the season because these may well be sell-outs!

3cornerBack to the upcoming week, tonight and tomorrow MascallDance presents the Three Cornered Hat.  With its deeply collaborative and interdisciplinary approach, the piece is a gutsy and energetic investigation of the spaces in-between. Quirky, eccentric and humorous, abstracted notions of human experience are played out in cramped quarters on stage to manipulate the space to mimic modern living. Interconnected vignettes are stitched together by the performers as they construct worlds out of piles of red artists’ notebooks building sculptural structures imbued with multi-layered meanings. Friday and Saturday April 10 and 11, Dezza Dance presents Launch: The Dance Lab Project featuring Warehaus Dance Collective. Adding to the delightful performance are Urban Contemporary crew OURO collective and acclaimed dancer Ms. Desirée Dunbar accompanied by the sweet, soulful sounds of vocalist Janelle Reid.  8pm, Saturday matinee 2pm Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre, Vancouver, 7646 Prince Albert Street, (2 blocks east of Fraser Street. at East 60th), Vancouver. Tix
