The Friday Round Up

So, how many shows did you see at Dance in Vancouver last week? Maybe need some time off? We will go easy on you!

But you really should get out to see dance-theatre artist Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg in Porno Death Culttonight through Saturday November 28. In a pilgrimage through a strange landscape of longing, a woman, a preacher, a yogini and a god, come face to face with each other, and the unanswerable questions that contort our collective perceptions. Director Marcus Youssef (Neworld Theatre) lends his unique style and impeccable eye to this quirky, idiosyncratic fusion of text, dance, character, and prayer for something better. At the Shadbolt Centre, 8pm Tix

Raven SpiritAlso through Saturday November 28Raven Spirit Dance presents Earth Song, a double bill of contemporary Aboriginal dance works which move from spirit to form through currents of spatial tension, and traverse territories of impulse and memory, singing the land and body.  Michelle Olson’s Northern Journey is inspired by the land we carry inside of us. This internal landscape carves out the pathways that lead to our animal instinct and to images that hold our human experience. Starr Muranko’s Spine of the Mother brings together Indigenous artists from Canada and Peru to trace the inner terrain of our bodies as women, while creating ritual which spans mountain ranges we have shared for millennia. Part of the Dance Centre’s Global Dance Connections series. Post-show artist talkback November 27. At the Scotiabank Dance Centre, 8pm. Tix

You have a number of opportunities to see Kokoro Dance and local music ensemble Standing Wave in Book of Love, Nov 25-28, and Dec 2-5. Book of Love features choreography and performance by Kokoro Dance founding directors, Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi, joined by dancers Molly McDermott and Billy Marchenski with music composed by Jeffrey Ryan and performed live by Standing Wave. At the Roundhouse Community Centre, 8pm. Tix

We want to get as much info about dance happenings around town out to the public as possible! So if you are presenting something, if you know of something amazing that is happening – shows, workshops, anything to do with dance – please let us know, and we will do our best to post it here. Send your info to debgordon03@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you!
