The Friday Round Up

Ok, so this is about the time of the year when we start warming our engines (tapping our feet?) in preparation for the coming months of dance, theatre and other good stuff! This week the PuSh Festival starts with lots of great dance, followed next month by Chutzpah! and in March the Vancouver International Dance Festival. And that is not even to mention all the independent dance shows that happen in between – including DanceHouse’s presentation of Betroffenheit, a collaboration between Kidd Pivot and the Electric Theatre Company February 26 and 27. But we will bring you more tales of that starting next week.

46.-Cie-Nacera-Belaza_Le-temps-scelle-∏-Bruno-Ruffini-600x352Next Wednesday January 27 to Friday January 29, The Dance Centre and the PuSh Festival present Compagnie Nacera Belaza  in Le Temps scellé. French-Algerian choreographer Nacera Belaza has been creating works for her critically acclaimed company since 1989, developing a singular form of meditative minimalism which creates a wealth of striking images. Le Temps scellé (The Sealed Time) immerses us in Belaza’s evocative world: the choreography has a mesmerising quality which commands our attention with its disciplined simplicity and focused intensity, at times erupting into frenzied bursts of energy, but holding an underlying sensuality that is truly captivating. Light and darkness, time and space, mysticism and spirituality, are all woven together with an acute sense of the now. At the Scotiabank Dance Centre, 8pm. Post show talkback Jan 28. Tix
MONOn Thursday January 28, also as part of the PuSh Festival, RUN to see Monumental, a collaboration between Vancouver’s The Holy Body Tattoo dance company and post-rock giants Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This work was originally created by Holy Body Tattoo co-directors Dana Gingras and Noam Gagnon back in 2005 – just before the company as it was known folded. This re-mount has 9 new dancers and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who will performing live on stage! Read the Georgia Straight article for more – but seriously, if there are tickets still available, snatch em’ up for history in the making! Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 8pm. Tix
